In Dune (1965), Duncan Idaho is described by Paul Atreides as having a "dark round face" with "feline movements," making him an exceptional weapons teacher. Lady Jessica calls him "the admirable fighting man whose abilities at guarding and surveillance are so esteemed." During the Harkonnen-Sardaukar assault on Arrakis, he saves Paul and Lady Jessica before being cornered at a Botanical Testing Station, where he kills 19 Sardaukar—a record for their fearsome supersoldiers—before dying from a "grievous head wound." His body is sold to the Tleilaxu, who create gholas that inherit his rebellious streak. In Dune Messiah (1969), the ghola Hayt is given to Emperor Paul as a "psychic poison" but recovers memories after being programmed by Bijaz to kill Paul with the phrase "She is gone." By Children of Dune (1976), Duncan serves as Alia's husband and Mentat, killing Javid and insulting Stilgar three times to provoke rebellion against Alia's possession by Baron Harkonnen. His final words are: "Two deaths for the Atreides. The second for no better reason than the first." In God Emperor of Dune (1981), a new ghola serves Leto II, struggling with the Tyrant's oppressive rule before joining Siona Atreides to assassinate him.

In Their Own Story

In Dune, Duncan Idaho lives among the Fremen as Leto's ambassador, serving both Duke Leto and leader Stilgar. When Sardaukar disguised as Harkonnens attack Arrakis, he saves Paul and Jessica but is ultimately killed after slaying 19 Sardaukar. His death triggers a chain of events leading to his resurrection by the Tleilaxu as Hayt in Dune Messiah (1969). Hayt, trained as a Mentat and Zensunni philosopher without memory, feels vague hints of his past life until Bijaz uses a humming intonation to program him to kill Paul. The attempt restores Duncan's memories, culminating in the revelation that the Tleilaxu can recreate Chani only if Paul abdicates. Later, in Children of Dune (1976), Duncan is Alia's husband and Mentat. When Alia becomes possessed by Baron Harkonnen, he flees to protect Leto II and Ghanima, killing Javid and insulting Stilgar to spark Fremen opposition before allowing himself to be struck down by Stilgar in a calculated sacrifice.
