Eighteen years after Shaddam IV ascended as Padishah Emperor, House Vernius found itself in exile. Their former homeworld, Ix, had been conquered and repurposed by the Tleilaxu Master Researcher Hidar Fen Ajidica for illegal spice synthesis labs under the direction of Count Fenring. Rhombur Vernius, a leader still struggling to liberate his home, sought aid from the Bene Gesserit order, where he was matched with a young woman named Tessia who provided him new purpose. While on Caladan, Rhombur and his sister Kailea worked alongside Duke Leto Atreides. The Harkonnen family played a central role in their downfall; specifically, an agent named Chiara infiltrated the house as Kailea's lady-in-waiting to poison her mind against Leto. This manipulation contributed to a tragic explosion on Leto's skyclipper, where Rhombur was reduced to a charred lump of flesh while protecting Leto and his son Victor.

Duke Leto Atreides, after much soul-searching, refused the deal, fearing harm would come to both House Atreides and House Vernius. Instead, Tessia, acting with Leto's consent, hired Dr. Wellington Yueh, a cybernetics expert, to fashion a replacement body for Rhombur. This act of technological salvation allowed Rhombur to survive his catastrophic injuries. The narrative also weaves in the fate of Gurney Halleck, who escaped Harkonnen slave pits on Giedi Prime after witnessing the murder of his sister Bheth. He eventually joined the renegade Earl Dominic Vernius. After Dominic was killed on Dune, Gurney traveled to Caladan and swore loyalty to House Atreides, further intertwining the fate of the Vernius survivors with the Atreides cause.
