Following Paul's rise as leader among the Fremen, he utilized their fighting abilities and the Bene Gesserit weirding way to retake Arrakis from the Harkonnens. However, victory did not bring peace; instead, a religion arose around him, sparking a jihad across the universe in his name. Korba, originally one of the Fedaykin death commandos, ascended to become a chief priest of this new faith. Not all Fremen supported this expansion; Farok, another Fedaykin, grew disillusioned with how Paul's regime altered their culture and joined a conspiracy initiated by the Spacing Guild, Tleilaxu, and Bene Gesserit to unseat him. The conflict was so pervasive that it required the death of Chani, who died giving birth to Paul's twin heirs, Leto II and Ghanima. Ultimately, blinded by his own prescience and unable to stop the bloodshed, Paul followed Fremen tradition and walked into the desert to die.

The transformation of the Fremen from hidden desert survivors to galactic conquerors is marked by deep internal conflict. While Korba embraced the new religion as a priest, Farok represented the Fremen who felt betrayed by the changes Paul brought to their way of life. This fracture led Farok to join the conspiracy against the Emperor, seeking to restore their lost culture. The violence of the jihad touched even the inner sanctum; Lichna, daughter of trusted Fedaykin leader Otheym, was killed and impersonated by the Tleilaxu Face Dancer Scytale in a failed attempt to infiltrate Paul's household. Amidst this turmoil, Chani suffered a tragic end, dying during childbirth. The story concludes with Paul, having secured the throne but lost his sight, choosing exile over continued rule, walking into the deep desert as a final act of Fremen tradition.
